Each child of an huntington’s disease parent has a 50-50 chance of inheriting the HD gene. If a child does not inherit the HD gene, he or she will not develop the disease and cannot pass it to subsequent generations. A person who inherits the HD gene, and survives long enough, will sooner or later develop the disease.
In 1872, the American physician George Huntington wrote about an illness that he called “an heirloom from generations away back in the dim past.” He was not the first to describe the disorder, which has been traced back to the Middle Ages at least.
