Signs of appendicitis

The appendix is a small, worm-like appendage attached to the colon. Signs of appendicitis on computed tomography scan include lack of oral contrast in the appendix, direct visualization of appendiceal enlargement, and appendiceal wall enhancement with IV contrast. Appendicitis typically begins with a vague pain in the middle of the abdomen often near the navel or “belly button” (umbilicus).
However, the pain may also be felt in other parts of the belly, so don’t rule out appendicitis just because it doesn’t follow the typical “path”. Appendicitisis most often treated with a combination of surgery and antibiotics. Only a doctor can properly diagnose and treat the problem. Mortality rate and complications in acute appendicitis are very minimal if the doctor treats the condition early.
